Denial

Denial

The first piece in this collection represents the years I lived in denial. The participation of sweeping micro aggressions under the rug, allowing my pain, anger, resentment, and heartbreak to pile up and boil beneath the surface.

11" x 38" including dowel and fringe.

Made with 100% natural fibers consisting of fine highland wool, alpaca, linen, and targhee wool. It hangs on a hand-sanded wooden dowel.

Prices of each piece vary by quality and quantity of material, detail work, and time invested in each piece. The more labor intensive pieces require an average of 14 hours to complete.

This collection is inspired by the examination of fresh, gaping wounds. The tearing open of old scars. The deterioration caused by keeping secrets for others, silence, gaslighting, abandonment. The healing powers of shedding light on darkness and the transformative effects of recovery. It is a representation of the evolution from separation and grief to restoration and healing.

Disintegration

Disintegration

The second piece in this collection represents the slow, and then sudden deterioration of a relationship. Its visual inspiration comes from the appearance of small fissures in ice just before it breaks. Though something may seem or appear to be unbreakable, its illusion of invincibility can lead to calamity.

9 1/2" x 27" including dowel and fringe.

Made with 100% natural fibers consisting of fine highland wool, alpaca, and linen. It hangs on a hand-sanded wooden dowel.

Abandonment

Abandonment

The third piece in this collection represents the chasm created by emotional abandonment in a relationship. "Drifting apart like two sheets of ice, my love." - Daughter, "Winter"

14" x 29" including dowel and fringe.

Dissociation I

Dissociation I

The fourth and fifth pieces in this collection were once connected as one piece, but have since been separated. This piece, and its other half, represent the physical distance created by separation between two individuals.

Anger

Anger

The sixth piece in this collection represents the familiar, insidious, and consuming power of anger and resentment. The way it binds and constricts while simultaneously energizing, like fuel to fire.

12 1/2" x 22 1/2" including dowel and fringe.

Made with 100% natural fibers consisting of fine highland wool, Peruvian highland wool, alpaca, linen, and American wool. It hangs on a hand-sanded wooden dowel.

Ambivalence

Acceptance

Acceptance

The ninth, and final, piece of this collection represents forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration.

I was heavily inspired by the cinematography, score, and themes of the film, Arrival, while working on this collection. Near the film's end the protagonist, Louise, says,

“Despite knowing the journey, and where it leads, I embrace it. And I welcome every moment of it.” Arrival, 2016

white tears icicle gold plains

white tears icicle gold plains

This particular weaving was inspired by the explosion of uninhibited emotion and chemical reactions in the brain after giving birth. The name of this piece, as well as its companion, is taken directly from a poem by Maya Angelou.

17" x 25"

Made with 100% natural fibers consisting of American wool, Romanian wool, cotton, and Merino wool. It hangs on a hand-sanded and stained wooden dowel.

The Mothering Blackness by Maya Angelou
She came home running
    back to the mothering blackness
    deep in the smothering blackness
white tears icicle gold plains of her face
    She came home running

She came down creeping
    here to the black arms waiting
    now to the warm heart waiting
rime of alien dreams defrost her rich brown face
    She came down creeping

She came home blameless
    black yet as Hagar’s daughter
    tall as was Sheba’s daughter
threats of northern winds die on the desert’s face
    She came home blameless
threats of northern winds die on the desert's face

threats of northern winds die on the desert's face

This weaving is inspired by the side effects of anti-depressant withdrawals: dizziness, confusion, mood swings, and insomnia. The name of this piece, as well as its companion, is taken directly from a poem by Maya Angelou.

13" x 28"

Made with 100% natural fibers consisting of American wool, Romanian wool, cotton, Merino wool, and recycled Sari silk. It hangs on a hand-sanded and stained wooden dowel.

they shall rise again

they shall rise again

Inspired by the traditional legend of the phoenix rising from the ashes and by one of my favorite poems by Dylan Thomas, from which the name of this piece is directly taken.

9" x 19 1/2"

Made with 100% natural fibers consisting of cotton, lambswool, handspun American Targhee wool, Alpaca and Merino wool, and silk. It hangs on a hand-sanded and stained wooden dowel.

And Death Shall Have No Dominion by Dylan Thomas
And death shall have no dominion.
Dead man naked they shall be one
With the man in the wind and the west moon;
When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,
They shall have stars at elbow and foot;
Though they go mad they shall be sane,
Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again;
Though lovers be lost love shall not;
And death shall have no dominion.

And death shall have no dominion.
Under the windings of the sea
They lying long shall not die windily;
Twisting on racks when sinews give way,
Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break;
Faith in their hands shall snap in two,
And the unicorn evils run them through;
Split all ends up they shan't crack;
And death shall have no dominion.

And death shall have no dominion.
No more may gulls cry at their ears
Or waves break loud on the seashores;
Where blew a flower may a flower no more
Lift its head to the blows of the rain;
Though they be mad and dead as nails,
Heads of the characters hammer through daisies;
Break in the sun till the sun breaks down,
And death shall have no dominion.
Of petals from some magic rose

Of petals from some magic rose

This piece is inspired by a soft rising up from the ashes, the silent sister of the phoenix, if you will. The name of this weaving is taken directly from a poem by Dylan Thomas.

10" x 19"

Made of 100% natural fibers consisting of cotton, lambswool, Cormo, Alpaca, and Merino wool, and silk. It hangs on a hand-sanded and stained wooden dowel.

Clown in the Moon by Dylan Thomas
My tears are like the quiet drift
Of petals from some magic rose;
And all my grief flows from the rift
Of unremembered skies and snows.

I think, that if I touched the earth,
It would crumble;
It is so sad and beautiful,
So tremulously like a dream.
You open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens

You open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens

This weaving is inspired by the glacial movements of growing things in nature, as well as its tendency to consume and dominate for self-preservation. The title of this piece is taken directly from a poem by E. E. Cummings.

12" x 31 1/2"

Made with 100% natural fibers consisting of Merino wool, baby Camel wool, Tussah silk, organic Cormo wool, lambswool, and cotton. It hangs on a hand-sanded and stained wooden dowel.

Love and Its Mysteries 3 by E. E. Cummings
somewhere i have never travelled,gladly beyond
any experience,your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skillfuly,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody,not even the rain,has such small hands
the snow carefully everywhere descending

the snow carefully everywhere descending

Much like its companion piece, this weaving is inspired by nature's slow and quiet dominance. The title of this piece is taken directly from a poem by E. E. Cummings.

10" x 30 1/2"

somewhere i have never travelled,gladly beyond
any experience,your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skillfuly,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody,not even the rain,has such small hands

These Were the Days When My Heart Was Volcanic

These Were the Days When My Heart Was Volcanic

This piece is inspired by the duality of joy and despair, and the split between contrasting emotions that boil beneath the surface and threaten to erupt when we are pressured to abide by society's expectations of new motherhood. The name of this weaving is taken directly from a poem by Edgar Allan Poe.

8" x 16 1/2"

Made from superfine Texas Merino, super kid Texas Mohair, Italian shimmer string, gold beads, and 100% organic Italian linen. It hangs on a hand-sanded and stained wooden dowel.

Ulalume - A Ballad by Edgar Allan Poe
The skies they were ashen and sober;
      The leaves they were crispéd and sere—
      The leaves they were withering and sere;
It was night, in the lonesome October
      Of my most immemorial year;
It was hard by the dim lake of Auber,
      In the misty mid region of Weir:—
It was down by the dank tarn of Auber,
      In the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir.

Here once, through an alley Titanic,
      Of cypress, I roamed with my Soul—
      Of cypress, with Psyche, my Soul.
These were days when my heart was volcanic
      As the scoriac rivers that roll—
      As the lavas that restlessly roll
Their sulphurous currents down Yaanek,
      In the ultimate climes of the Pole—
That groan as they roll down Mount Yaanek,
      In the realms of the Boreal Pole.

Our talk had been serious and sober,
      But our thoughts they were palsied and sere—
      Our memories were treacherous and sere;
For we knew not the month was October,
      And we marked not the night of the year—
      (Ah, night of all nights in the year!)
We noted not the dim lake of Auber,
      (Though once we had journeyed down here)
We remembered not the dank tarn of Auber,
      Nor the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir.

And now, as the night was senescent,
      And star-dials pointed to morn—
      As the star-dials hinted of morn—
At the end of our path a liquescent
      And nebulous lustre was born,
Out of which a miraculous crescent
      Arose with a duplicate horn—
Astarte's bediamonded crescent,
      Distinct with its duplicate horn.

And I said—"She is warmer than Dian;
      She rolls through an ether of sighs—
      She revels in a region of sighs.
She has seen that the tears are not dry on
      These cheeks where the worm never dies,
And has come past the stars of the Lion,
      To point us the path to the skies—
      To the Lethean peace of the skies—
Come up, in despite of the Lion,
      To shine on us with her bright eyes—
Come up through the lair of the Lion,
      With love in her luminous eyes."

But Psyche, uplifting her finger,
      Said—"Sadly this star I mistrust—
      Her pallor I strangely mistrust—
Ah, hasten! ah, let us not linger!
      Ah, fly!—let us fly!—for we must."
In terror she spoke; letting sink her
      Wings till they trailed in the dust—
In agony sobbed; letting sink her
      Plumes till they trailed in the dust—
      Till they sorrowfully trailed in the dust.

I replied—"This is nothing but dreaming.
      Let us on by this tremulous light!
      Let us bathe in this crystalline light!
Its Sybilic splendor is beaming
      With Hope and in Beauty to-night—
      See!—it flickers up the sky through the night!
Ah, we safely may trust to its gleaming,
      And be sure it will lead us aright—
We safely may trust to a gleaming
      That cannot but guide us aright
Since it flickers up to Heaven through the night."

Thus I pacified Psyche and kissed her,
      And tempted her out of her gloom—
      And conquered her scruples and gloom;
And we passed to the end of the vista—
      But were stopped by the door of a tomb—
      By the door of a legended tomb:
And I said—"What is written, sweet sister,
      On the door of this legended tomb?"
      She replied—"Ulalume—Ulalume!—
      'Tis the vault of thy lost Ulalume!"

Then my heart it grew ashen and sober
      As the leaves that were crispèd and sere—
      As the leaves that were withering and sere,
And I cried—"It was surely October,
      On this very night of last year,
      That I journeyed—I journeyed down here!—
      That I brought a dread burden down here—
      On this night of all nights in the year,
      Ah, what demon has tempted me here?
Well I know, now, this dim lake of Auber—
      This misty mid region of Weir:—
Well I know, now, this dank tarn of Auber—
      This ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir."

Said we, then—the two, then—"Ah, can it
      Have been that the woodlandish ghouls—
      The pitiful, the merciful ghouls,
To bar up our way and to ban it
      From the secret that lies in these wolds—
      From the thing that lies hidden in these wolds—
Had drawn up the spectre of a planet
      From the limbo of lunary souls—
This sinfully scintillant planet
From the Hell of the planetary souls?"
